Burst Pipe — The First 5 Minutes

A burst pipe is one of the most stressful home emergencies. But acting quickly and in the right order limits damage dramatically.

⚡ Immediate steps

1. Turn off the main stopcock immediately — under kitchen sink, clockwise to close. 2. Turn off electricity at the consumer unit if water is near electrics. 3. Open all cold taps to drain remaining water faster. 4. If you have a loft tank — flush all toilets to empty it. 5. Catch water with buckets and towels. Protect floors and electronics. 6. Call an emergency plumber. 7. Photograph everything for your insurance claim.

🩹 Temporary fixes while waiting

Self-amalgamating tape can slow a minor leak temporarily. Pipe repair clamps can hold a burst together for hours. These are emergency measures only — the pipe needs proper repair.

📋 After the repair

Contact your home insurer as soon as possible — most policies cover trace and access (finding the leak) and damage caused by the water. Keep all receipts. Get a written invoice from your plumber.
Don't wait: Even a small burst pipe releases around 400 litres an hour. A 30-minute delay while searching for the stopcock can mean thousands of pounds of additional damage.
