Most likely cause & what to check

1

Remove the shower drain cover — it usually clips or screws off. Wear rubber gloves.

2

Pull out any hair and soap build-up from the drain entry — this is almost always the cause of slow draining showers.

3

Use an old toothbrush and warm water to scrub the drain cover and trap.

4

Pour a kettle of hot (not boiling) water down the drain to flush loosened soap scum.

5

If still slow, use a drain unblocker gel — leave for the time stated on the packaging then flush thoroughly with hot water.

6

If the drain is still blocked after this, the blockage may be further down the waste pipe. A plumber's drain snake or high-pressure jetter may be needed.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean my shower drain?

Once a month prevents major blockages. A drain hair catcher (£2–5) placed over the drain is the easiest prevention method.

Can I use bleach to unblock a shower drain?

Bleach kills bacteria and deodorises but doesn't dissolve hair or soap effectively. A proper drain gel containing sodium hydroxide works much better.
