Most likely cause & what to check

1

Remove the overflow plate and the drain cover — the overflow plate is on the side of the bath near the top, usually held by one or two screws.

2

Pull out the pop-up plug mechanism if fitted — this is the most common cause as hair wraps around it. Clean off all hair and soap scum.

3

If the drain is still slow, pour boiling water down in stages — half a kettle at a time. Follow with a squirt of washing-up liquid.

4

Use drain unblocker gel if the above doesn't work — follow the manufacturer's instructions and flush with hot water after.

5

For stubborn blockages, use a small drain snake or flexible drain cleaning tool to physically break up or retrieve the blockage further down the pipe.

6

Refit the overflow plate and test the bath drains freely.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a plunger on a bath drain?

Yes — cover the overflow hole with a wet cloth first to create suction, then plunge over the drain opening.
