Boiler flue safety — what to look out for
Check the steps below first — if you're not confident, get it fixed safely today.
Post a job — we'll find you an engineer →⚠️ Never block, modify, or fit anything to a boiler flue terminal without Gas Safe engineer advice. A blocked flue causes CO to spill into the living space.

Most likely cause & what to check
The flue removes combustion gases (including carbon monoxide) from your boiler to the outside. A blocked, corroded, or incorrectly installed flue is one of the most serious gas safety hazards. Understanding what to look for can save lives.
For a balanced flue (the white plastic pipe and terminal you see on the outside wall of modern combi boilers): check the terminal is not obstructed by plants, bird nests, garden furniture, or anything pushed against it. There must be clear space — the manufacturer's minimum distance is usually 300mm on all sides.
Look at the terminal during operation on a cold day — you should see a small plume of steam from the flue gases condensing. A very large, dark, or sooty plume indicates incomplete combustion. No visible plume at all when the boiler is running may indicate a blockage.
For older boilers with a conventional flue going up the chimney: ensure the chimney pot is in good condition and the chimney is swept regularly (for gas, a visual check is sufficient but a blocked chimney is dangerous). Fit a bird guard to the chimney pot.
Inside the house: the flue pipe between the boiler and the wall or ceiling penetration should be intact, undamaged, and properly jointed. Any cracks, gaps, or disconnected sections allow combustion gases to enter the room. This is an immediate safety hazard — isolate the boiler and call a Gas Safe engineer.
At your annual boiler service, the engineer performs a spillage test on room-sealed and open-flued appliances using a CO analyser at the flue outlet. Make sure you see this test being done — it is a mandatory part of the service on open-flued appliances.
