Most likely cause & what to check
It is illegal for any person to carry out work on gas appliances, pipework, or flues in the UK unless they are registered with Gas Safe Register. Using an unregistered engineer invalidates your home insurance and could endanger your life.
Every Gas Safe registered engineer carries an ID card. Ask to see it before any work starts. The card shows the engineer's name, photo, registration number, and — critically — the appliances they are qualified to work on (domestic boilers, cookers, LPG, etc.).
Verify the card is genuine using the Gas Safe Register website or phone line. Visit gassaferegister.co.uk/check-the-register or call 0800 408 5500. Enter the registration number or the engineer's name and postcode.
The register lists exactly which types of gas work the engineer is qualified for. An engineer registered only for gas cookers is not qualified to service your boiler — check the specific appliance category matches your job.
Beware of "Gas Safe certified" claims — there is no such thing. The correct term is "Gas Safe registered." Also beware of fake cards — always cross-check the number online rather than trusting the physical card alone.
For commercial properties, the same Gas Safe registration applies but engineers must also hold COCV1 and other commercial ACS qualifications. Domestic Gas Safe registration does not cover commercial gas work.

Frequently asked questions
What happens if I use an unregistered gas engineer?
Using an unregistered engineer is illegal under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and invalidates your home insurance. Any work done by an unregistered person must be inspected and potentially redone by a Gas Safe engineer before it can be considered safe.
Is "Gas Safe certified" the same as Gas Safe registered?
No — there is no such thing as "Gas Safe certified." The correct term is "Gas Safe registered." Be wary of anyone using "certified" as it may indicate they are not on the official register. Always verify the engineer's registration number at gassaferegister.co.uk before work begins.
What does the Gas Safe ID card show?
The card shows the engineer's name, photo, registration number, and — importantly — the specific types of gas work they are qualified to carry out (e.g. domestic boilers, gas cookers, LPG). Always check that the category on the card matches the job they are doing for you.
