The Nest Learning Thermostat is a premium smart heating controller but can develop connectivity or compatibility issues. Most Nest problems are fixable without a plumber — the most common cause is a weak Wi-Fi signal, low battery, or the C-wire (common wire) not being connected.

Most likely cause & what to check

1

Check the Nest display — if it is blank or very dim, the battery is low. Nest thermostats charge from the heating wiring but if your boiler does not supply a C-wire, the battery drains over time. Remove the Nest from its base and charge it with a USB cable for 30 minutes.

2

Check your Wi-Fi signal at the thermostat location. Nest requires a strong 2.4GHz Wi-Fi signal. If the signal is weak, move your router or add a Wi-Fi extender.

3

Open the Nest app and go to Settings > Your thermostat > Connection status. Follow any prompts to reconnect the device.

4

If Nest is online but the boiler is not responding, check the heat link (the wired module connected to your boiler). It should have a green light. A red or flashing amber light means the heat link has lost connection — press and hold the button on the heat link for 10 seconds to reset it.

5

If Nest shows "Delayed — waiting to start", this is a compressor protection feature for heat pumps (should not apply to gas boilers). Check your equipment settings in the Nest app under Equipment > Delays.

6

If heating won't turn off, go to the Nest app and set the temperature below room temperature to force it off. If this doesn't work, turn the heating off at the programmer or boiler directly.

7

For persistent problems, check the Nest compatibility page — some older UK boilers (particularly those with only 2-wire connections) need a compatibility module (Heat Link with additional wiring) for reliable operation.
