Safety First
Always allow a boiling water tap tank to cool completely before any inspection — the pressurised tank contains water at 100°C+ and presents a severe scalding risk.

Boiling water taps (Quooker, Zip HydroTap, Grohe Red, and similar brands) have a small pressurised tank under the sink that keeps water at boiling point. When the tap produces cold water, the problem is usually with this tank — either the temperature setting, a tripped thermostat, or a failed element.

Most likely cause & what to check

1

Check the tank under the sink — it should be warm or hot to the touch if working correctly. If it is cold, it has lost power or the element has failed.

2

Check the power supply — the tank has a plug or hardwired connection. Ensure it is plugged in and the switch is on. Check the fuse in the plug (usually 5A or 13A depending on brand).

3

On Quooker tanks, check the display on the tap — a series of LED flashes indicates specific fault codes. Check the Quooker website or manual for the code (e.g. 3 flashes = high temperature limiter tripped).

4

If the high temperature limiter has tripped (overheating protection), the tank must be allowed to cool before the reset button (usually under the tank) can be pressed. Do not press reset if the tank is hot — wait until the tank is cool to the touch.

5

Check the temperature setting on the tank — some models have a dial or app-controlled temperature setting. If set too low (below 95°C for boiling), the water will not be hot enough at the tap.

6

If the tank is powered, not tripped, and set correctly but still not heating, the element has likely failed. Element replacement is a plumber job (£100–250 for parts and labour depending on brand).

7

For Zip HydroTap, contact Zip directly on their service line as repairs must often be done by their authorised service engineers to maintain warranty.
