⚠️ Central heating water is dirty and will stain. Protect floors with dust sheets. Have plenty of towels ready.

Most likely cause & what to check

1

Turn off the heating and let the system cool for at least an hour before starting.

2

Close the TRV (thermostatic radiator valve) — turn it clockwise as far as it goes.

3

Close the lockshield valve — the cap at the other end of the radiator. Remove the plastic cover and use an adjustable spanner to close it clockwise. Count the number of turns so you can open it back to the same position.

4

Bleed the radiator to release pressure — insert the bleed key and open the bleed valve until all air and water stops coming out. Close it again.

5

Place a towel and tray under the TRV end. Undo the union nut connecting the TRV to the radiator inlet — water will run out. Capture it in the bucket.

6

Repeat on the lockshield end. Lift the radiator off its wall brackets — get a second person to help as they are heavy and awkward.

7

Plug the radiator inlets with old rags to prevent spills while it is off the wall.

8

To refit: lift back onto brackets, reconnect union nuts, open the lockshield the same number of turns, open the TRV, then bleed the radiator to remove any trapped air.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to drain the whole system to remove a radiator?

No — isolating both valves means only the water inside the radiator itself is lost. This is about 5–15 litres depending on the radiator size.

How do I know how many turns to open the lockshield?

Count the turns as you close it. When refitting, open it the same number. This maintains the system balance.
