An annual oil boiler service is not legally required for homeowners (unlike rental properties), but it is essential for reliability, efficiency, and safety. An unserviced oil boiler costs significantly more to run, breaks down more frequently, and can produce dangerous levels of smoke and carbon monoxide.

Most likely cause & what to check

1

An OFTEC registered engineer carries out the service — check the OFTEC register at oftec.org or call 0845 658 5080. Only OFTEC (or similar) registered engineers should work on oil-fired equipment.

2

What is included in a standard oil boiler service: replace the burner nozzle (atomises oil), clean or replace the ignition electrodes, clean the photocell (flame sensor), clean the heat exchanger, check and clean the condensate trap (on condensing boilers), and carry out a combustion analysis.

3

The combustion analysis (flue gas test) is the most important part — the engineer measures CO2, CO, and efficiency using a calibrated analyser. This confirms the boiler is burning efficiently and safely and not producing dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

4

The engineer will also inspect: oil supply pipe and filter for leaks or contamination, oil tank for corrosion and water ingress, flue and flue termination, and the programmer and controls.

5

Annual service costs: £80–130 for a standard oil boiler service; £120–160 if a nozzle replacement is needed. For AGA/Rayburn oil range cookers, expect £150–250 for the more complex service.

6

A service contract with an oil boiler engineer typically costs £120–200/year and includes an annual service plus priority callout rates and sometimes discounted parts. Worth considering for older boilers.

7

After a service, the engineer will provide a service report and should advise of any components that are wearing and likely to need replacement in the near future.
