Safety First
Refrigerant and electrical faults on heat pumps must be handled by an F-Gas and MCS certified engineer. Do not tamper with the outdoor unit.

The Mitsubishi Ecodan is a reliable piece of kit, but like any heat pump system, it can throw fault codes that leave you scratching your head. Problems ranging from water flow issues to communication errors between the indoor and outdoor units are more common than you'd think — especially in the first few years after installation or following a prolonged cold snap. Most faults are straightforward to diagnose once you know what the codes mean, and many can be resolved without calling an engineer. This guide walks through the most frequent Ecodan fault codes and what they actually tell you about what's gone wrong, so you can decide whether it's a quick fix or time to get a professional involved. If you're seeing persistent error messages or the system won't fire up at all, your MCS-certified installer or a Gas Safe and F-Gas registered engineer is your best next step.

Most likely cause & what to check

1

The Mitsubishi Ecodan is the UK's most widely installed air source heat pump — available in 5kW, 8.5kW, 11.2kW and 14kW variants, it uses the R32 refrigerant and is available as a monobloc (all-in-one outdoor unit) or split system (outdoor unit + indoor hydrobox). Manuals and fault guides are at library.mitsubishielectric.co.uk or call Mitsubishi Electric technical support on 0161 282 3400.

2

Fault code P1 (water flow error): the Ecodan cannot detect adequate water flow through the system. Check: all isolation valves on the heat pump pipework are fully open, system pressure is within range (usually 1–2.5 bar shown on the pressure gauge), the circulation pump is running (listen for it), and there are no airlocks in the system. Bleed any radiators that feel cool at the top. If P1 persists, an engineer should check the flow switch and circulation pump.

3

Fault code P5 (freeze protection / antifreeze stat): the Ecodan has detected water temperature approaching freezing in the system pipework. This can occur if the heat pump has been off for a long time in cold weather. The system may add glycol antifreeze — check the glycol concentration is correct (your installer should have done this at commissioning). Do not ignore P5 — a frozen heat pump system can cause serious damage.

4

Fault code U7 (communication error between indoor and outdoor unit): power-cycle the system — turn off the main isolator switch (next to the outdoor unit), wait 5 minutes, and turn back on. If U7 persists, there is a wiring or controller fault between the indoor hydrobox and outdoor unit — an engineer needs to check the communication wiring.

5

Poor performance in cold weather: the Ecodan is rated to operate down to -28°C outdoor temperature, so it should not simply stop in cold snaps. If performance drops significantly below 0°C, check the weather compensation settings are configured correctly and the backup immersion (if fitted) is enabled for very cold periods.

6

Ecodan warranty: Mitsubishi Electric offer a 5-year parts and labour warranty on the Ecodan when installed by an MCS-certified installer. Extended warranties up to 7 years are available. Register at mitsubishielectric.co.uk.

Frequently asked questions

What does fault code P1 mean on my Ecodan?

P1 signals a water flow error — the heat pump can't detect enough water moving through the pipework. Start by checking that all the isolation valves around the unit are fully open, that your system pressure is between 1 and 2.5 bar, and that the circulation pump is actually running (you should hear a faint hum). If those look fine, you likely have an airlock and need to bleed the radiators, starting with the ones furthest from the pump.

My Ecodan is showing P5 fault code — is this serious?

Yes — P5 means the system has detected water temperature dropping towards freezing, which can happen if the heat pump's been idle during very cold weather. A frozen system can cause serious internal damage, so don't ignore it. Check that your installer set the glycol antifreeze concentration correctly at commissioning; if it's low or missing, that's your problem and needs addressing immediately.

What should I do if my heat pump shows a U7 error?

U7 is a communication fault between the indoor hydrobox and outdoor unit. The first step is always a power-cycle: switch off the main isolator next to the outdoor unit, wait five minutes, then switch it back on. If U7 comes back, there's likely a wiring or controller issue that needs a qualified engineer to investigate the communication cables between the two units.

Why does my Ecodan perform poorly when it's really cold outside?

The Ecodan is rated down to -28°C, so a cold snap alone shouldn't cripple it — though efficiency does drop in freezing conditions. If performance is very poor below 0°C, check that your weather compensation settings are properly configured (your installer should have done this) and that any backup immersion heater is enabled for extreme cold periods. A qualified engineer can verify these settings for you.

Where can I find the manual for my Ecodan if I need more detail?

Mitsubishi Electric hosts all Ecodan manuals and fault guides on their library portal at library.mitsubishielectric.co.uk, or you can ring their technical support team on 0161 282 3400. They're helpful and knowledgeable, and will often talk you through simple checks over the phone before you need to book an engineer.
